The Northeast Ocean Data Portal is now more directly leveraging aquaculture datasets published and hosted by most New England states. Within the Aquaculture category in the Data Explorer, the Portal now includes layers specific to how each state collects and manages data pertinent to aquaculture activities in state waters. These layers are hosted and updated by each state, and the Portal will reflect the latest changes made by each state automatically, including:
- Maine Aquaculture Lease Sites – provided by Maine Department of Marine Resources
- New Hampshire Shellfish Aquaculture – provided by New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, Fish & Game Department
- Rhode Island Aquaculture Lease Sites – provided by Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management Division of Marine Fisheries
- Connecticut Aquaculture Gear Areas – provided by Connecticut Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Aquaculture
- New York Aquaculture Lease Sites – provided by New York State Department of State

Previously, NROC sought to aggregate and standardize the presentation of aquaculture data across all New England states. While there were benefits to displaying a single regional map layer, there were challenges in reconciling information and updating the data according to the different timelines for multiple programs.
