The Gulf of Maine is a region rich in history, natural resources, and ocean uses. This area is also under growing pressure from increased offshore wind development and other activities. Effective siting of new infrastructure and changes in ocean use require accurate data and collaboration between multiple stakeholders and resource management organizations. In response to long-expressed needs in the region, OCM worked with the states of Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts to develop a regional geomorphology data set which would form the framework for collaborative planning and assessment. A contract was awarded to a private sector company to process NOAA's BlueTopo bathymetric products to generate CMECS geoforms for the area. The project used semi-automated methods so that features identified throughout the region would be consistently mapped. Following completion of the semi-automated product, additional interpretation was conducted to add and refine features of interest that were not detected through the semi-automated process. This interpretation process was guided by input from regional marine geology and mapping experts. Efforts to expand and update this product are planned.

<purpose>The data was to support coordinated ocean planning among the three state partnership agencies, between state and federal organizations and the public at large. The interpreted layers were intended to complement the geoform vector polygon and raster products. </purpose>
<notes>The Interpreted Layers consists of 6 feature types that were delineated based on expert interpretation of BlueTopo products and reference information. The layers consist of Paleodeltas, Estuarine Sediment Shoals, Deltas, Cobble-Boulder Complexes, Basins, and Moraines.

<supplemental-information>The spatial domain of these data extend from the landward limit of BlueTopo tiles seaward to the 24 nautical mile Contiguous Zone boundary.</supplemental-information>

<accuracy>The accuracy of the interpreted geoforms in this data is a largely a function of the quality of the original Blue Topo source data and availability of reference data and publications.
The accuracy of the final geoform vector polygons was qualitatively assessed by the project team and an advisory panel of marine geologists and GIS experts. A review of the data was conducted by visually comparing the polygons to the source bathymetry and reference data/reports. No quantitative accuracy was calculated.</accuracy>
<horizontal-positional-accuracy>The positional accuracy of this data is that of the source BlueTopo source data tiles. </horizontal-positional-accuracy>
<completeness-report>The polygon delineation was accomplished primarily by identifying features at the 1:70K scale and then accomplishing the delineation at the 1:10K scale. Generally the minimum polygon size is the same as the 64 square meter (8x8 meter cells) in the source BlueTopo tiles.</completeness-report>
<conceptual-consistency>Polygon topology present. Every polygon has a label, there are no multiple labels within polygons, there are no contiguous polygons. </conceptual-consistency>

<description>Manual Delineation - The six target CMECS classes that were delineated using manual interpretation methods were paleo deltas, estuarine sediment shoals, deltas, cobble-boulder complexes, basins, and moraines. A combination of published data, slope derived from the bathymetry using the ArcGIS Pro Spatial Analyst Surface Parameters tool with a break of 1 degree, and interpretation of the bathymetric (hillshade) data. In Uchupi and Bolmer, 2008, the authors provided bounding bathymetric contours for several basins in the project area (Scantum, Tillies, Stellwagen, Little Stellwagen, Platts, Murray and Wilkinson, Matinicus, Jordan, and Jeffreys). These basins were plotted using the NBS bathymetric contours and then were overlaid on the bathymetric grid and slope derivative and modified to better represent the current basins. A generally very conservative approach was taken to these delineations and the resultant features are only identified where the source bathymetry was of high quality. It is likely that the extent of these features may change as new bathymetry becomes available.</description>
